Falcon Quest, by Charles Boyle In the year 2030, a new tyrant arises from the political rubble of the Soviet Union. Cruel and effective, Dmitri Yemetov crushes opposition while quoting Lincoln on preserving the Union. He restores the ideas and beliefs of the defunct USSR and enforces them in a high tech tyranny, the United Communist States. In a diplomat's gamble, the US sends its latest space shuttle to capture an ancient Soviet spacecraft, stranded in a wayward orbit. "Falcon" is rumored to have a dead pilot aboard. The Soviet Union always insisted it never lost a cosmonaut in space flight. If a lost cosmonaut is seen inside, the US intends to open the craft in a global TV broadcast. This worldwide display is planned to disprove Communist veracity and pressure the UCS into a global arms treaty. US astronauts Adam MacGregor and Tim Carver capture and open Falcon. The wax-like bodies of two cosmonauts from 1959 are found. One is a young woman, Ylena Valena. Both awaken from suspended animation. The male kills Carver, but is then killed by MacGregor. The battle damages the shuttle and strands it in space. Yemetov sends forces to board the shuttle in an attempt to capture the previously unknown hibernation fluid that was privately developed by Ylena's scientist father as an alternative to suicide. MacGregor foils the raid. Ylena and Adam fall in love and explore the joys of weightless sex. She worries about weakness for her return to earth and asks him to spin the shuttle to simulate gravity. Their odd experiment has horrifying results. Gravity triggers a biological catch-up clock, and she ages years in minutes as claw nails sprout and her hair burgeons in snarled tresses. The aging ends only when Adam stops the spin. It will resume and age her to death if she returns to earth's gravity. The lovers make a desperate bid for a future life together.
